According to the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) 1999 report, "To Err is Human," medical errors are the 8th leading cause of death in America. This does not include the number of people who survive, but become sicker as a result of mistakes made during their care.
Also reported in the IOMís report were the tremendous costs from medical errors. Total costs to the country (lost income, lost household production, disability, health care costs) from medical errors that result in harm to patients are between $17 billion and $29 billion. Health care costs account for more than one-half of these costs.
